WED APR 2 @ 7:30 PM
A Joya Kazi Unlimited Production
RHYTHM INDIA
Bollywood & Beyond
Rhythm India takes you on the journey of dance and celebration to Bollywood & Beyond. Experience the vibrant costumes, dynamic music, and soulful rhythms of the “ghungroo” dancing bells from the echoing heart beats of royal palaces and sacred temples, to the swaying voices of desert villages and modern stages. Created by World Choreography Award Nominee & 3xTelly Award Winning director & choreographer, Joya Kazi, and featuring the company dancers of Joya Kazi Unlimited as seen on screens from Bollywood to Hollywood.
LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Welcome to Rhythm India: Bollywood and Beyond. This show is my love letter to the Motherland where I was born, but left too soon to have much memory of. Nonetheless, Her music, dance, traditions and culture never left me and helped shape me into the South Asian American artist that I am today. “Bollywood” is a term coined by the West that doesn’t do justice to the multitude of classical, folk, traditional, and commercial art forms India has to offer. It unfairly groups television and film industries of different regions, music styles, theater forms, and dance disciplines into one cloudy genre. I hope that this show gives you a look into the beautiful world of just a few of the many different art forms India has to offer, both Bollywood and Beyond.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
As a social-impact organization and home to a Grammy Award-winning musical ensemble, Silkroad works to inspire collaboration in innovative ways that add more equity and justice into the world through the power of the arts. Today, under the leadership of Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens, Silkroad reaches new heights through a commitment to new music, a re-sparked mission towards cultural collaboration, and a reinvigorated focus to high-quality arts education that both reflects its mission and the times in which we live.
In Uplifted Voices, Silkroad shines a light on previously under-recognized voices from across the globe to change our perspective of the history and migration of music. Through a stunning collaboration of global instrumentation and strings, Silkroad’s newest project champions women and non-binary members of the Silkroad to tell a musical journey that connects the music of indigenous North America to the World. Drawing inspiration from the folk and ancestral music of Japan, Armenia, Ireland and the Hebrides, and native populations across North America, Uplifted Voices brings together this collection of distinctive and powerful musical origins within a contemporary musical tapestry.
ABOUT SILKROAD
Yo-Yo Ma conceived Silkroad in 1998, recognizing the historical Silk Road as a model for radical cultural collaboration—for the exchange of ideas, tradition, and innovation across borders. In an innovative experiment, he brought together musicians from the lands of the Silk Road to co-create a musical language founded in difference, thus creating the foundation of Silkroad: both a touring ensemble comprised of world-class musicians from all over the globe and a social-impact organization working to make a positive impact across borders through the arts. Today, under the leadership of Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens, Silkroad leads social impact initiatives and educational programming alongside the creation of new music by the Grammy Award-winning Silkroad Ensemble. ARTIST BIOS
Pura Fé
Lap-steel Slide Guitar, Voice
Pura Fé (Tuscarora/Taino) is an Indigenous activist, singer-songwriter, and storyteller known for her distinct, soulful vocals and for breathing life into several musical genres. Her work as a musician has brought her around the world to do work at festivals, benefits in classrooms, online, and in the studio. As a Native activist and cultural leader, she has done work to combat the erasure of native culture, restore traditions, build community, fight corporate takeover of native land, and give a voice to those facing social injustice. As the founding member of the internationally renowned Native Women’s a cappella trio Ulali, Pura Fé helped to create a movement throughout Indian Country, which not only empowered Native Women’s hand drum and harmony, but also built a bridge for Native music into the mainstream music scene. Pura Fé’s solo career has produced six studio albums with her Native Blues and lap-steel slide guitar work. While touring Europe with Music Maker Blues Review under Dixie Frog and Nueva Onda French labels, she won Grand Prix du Disque from L’Académie CharlsCros (French Grammy) for Best WorldAlbum in 2006 for Tuscarora Nation Blues, and a Native American Music Award (NAMMY) for Best Female Artist for Follow Your Heart’s Desire in the same year. Pura Fé and Ulali appeared in and consulted for the Rezolution Pictures Documentary RUMBLE:The Indians That Rocked The World, which won first place at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Pura Fé commented on her experience with the documentary, “This gave me a chance to reenact a piece of the historical birth of blues music that no one considers or hears about”. Incumbent United States Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo once said, “We are systematically being written out of everything.” To have a platform to help bring awareness to the mainstream was crucial to Pura Fé and Ulali. Today, Pura Fé lives in Canada and is writing a film for Rezolution Pictures. She is also working with First Nations dance and theater troops while recording a new album.

Sons of the Pioneers
SUN APR 13 @ 3 PM
Celebrating MORE THAN 91 Years in the Saddle!
Kick up your boot heels and jangle your spurs with us! This year, the Sons of the Pioneers celebrate an unparalleled milestone: more than 91 unbroken years of best-in-the-West entertainment. It’s enough to make our heads spin like we’re trying to stay on ol’ Skyball Paint.
In late 1933, three talented musicians (including the man who would soon become Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys) were introduced on a Los Angeles radio station as the Sons of the Pioneers. Little did those young men know they were launching a juggernaut that would somehow survive the Great Depression, World War II, the advent of television, space travel, Elvis’s hips and rock ‘n’ roll, the Internet, the tech revolution, and a global pandemic.
Over the years the group’s myriad achievements in radio, movies, television, recordings, and on stage have been fueled by a steady rotation of now more than 40 talented musicians. The current group—Tommy Nallie, Ken Lattimore, John Fullerton, Paul Elliott, and Chuck Ervin—are proud to continue the Pioneer tradition and don’t take the responsibility lightly.
Tommy, who first signed on in 1983 and is now the group’s fourth trail boss, is committed to keeping those signature Pioneer harmonies pure and the musicianship top-notch. Most important, he says, is keeping the Pioneers’ musical campfire burning bright for years to come. “Ninety years is a mighty good run, but I’m betting 100 is gonna be even better!”

Best of SF Comedy Competition
FRI APR 18 @ 8 PM
This evening of side-splitting laughs will be headlined by Don Friesen. If you missed Don’s hilarious Showtime one-hour Special, “Ask Your Mom,” don’t miss his upcoming special “Best Foot Forward.” Engaging, clever, and just flat-out funny, Friesen ignites the stage with a playful, high-energy spoof of his life as a modern suburban dad, and (until recently) husband, who’s just trying to make sense out of the constantly changing world around him. Everyday life has never been funnier. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says “Friesen will leave a lasting comic impression,” and describes him as “offbeat, satirical, self-deprecating and slightly out of control.” With an act that somehow manages to be both intimate and absurd, Don will draw you into his world where he skillfully blends characters, voices, physicality, and parodies to create some of the most memorable routines around. Friesen’s credits include Showtime, Netflix, Dry Bar Comedy Live at Gotham, and Comics Unleashed, and he is the only two-time winner in the 50-year history of the prestigious San Francisco International Comedy Competition. He is wildly popular on KLOS’ 5:00 Funnies, 100.3 The Sound’s Laughter at 45 After, and XM Sirius Satellite Radio.
