Adventurer Peter Hillary: 70 Years of Everest
THU MAR 5 @ 7:30 PM

Peter Hillary was brought up in a household where adventure was always on the menu. His father, Sir Edmund Hillary, made the first ascent of Mt. Everest in 1953 with his climbing partner Tenzing Norgay. That expedition would launch his family on extraordinary journeys through the Himalayas and around the world, and inspire a life of philanthropy. The Hillary family never travels without doing good.

A true lifetime adventurer, Peter Hillary has been on 50 mountaineering expeditions around the world, including five on Mount Everest and the other six peaks of the world’s tallest peaks, the “Seven Summits.” He became the first second-generation summiteer to reach the top of the world’s highest mountain. He made his second ascent of Everest alongside “Mr. Everest” Pete Athans and Jamling Norgay, the son of Tenzing, in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of their fathers’ world-record-setting climb. Peter went on to create his own firsts, trekking to the South Pole on skis, forging a new route across the sensory deprived ice plateau of Antarctica.

Peter chairs the Himalayan Trust, a nonprofit organization his father founded to provide health, environment and education services for the people in the Himalayas. The Trust built 42 schools and hospitals at the foot of Mount Everest—all programs at the request of the local people with their cooperation—and now runs educational programs at 80 schools. About his life of adventure and hands-on philanthropy, Peter has written seven books, made numerous documentaries, including two for National Geographic, and leads adventure travel expeditions worldwide.

Kings Return
FRI MAR 6 @ 8 PM

Dynamic and soothing four-piece vocal group Kings Return take pride in crafting a diverse yet supremely cohesive a cappella sound: The blend of their unique vocal timbres is so rich and so smooth that, at times, it sounds more like a full choir than a mere four men. Discovered after posting a series of bare-bones stairwell performances that went viral, their music is a balm to the soul, laced with expansive harmonies that flex the agility and effortless range of their vocal talent.

Their sound has earned comparisons to iconic acts like Take 6 and Boyz II Men. But what sets Kings Return apart is their seamless integration of a wide range of genres and styles. Drawn to the flexibility of a cappella music, they take full advantage of the genre-mixing aspects of the tradition. Their brand of R&B is entwined with free moments of jazz, soulful bursts of gospel, and bright touches of pop—all built on a solid, classical foundation. Theirs is the kind of talent that makes virtuosic performance look (and sound) like sublime, effortless playtime, defying the constraints of any single genre to explore a myriad of sonic shades and textures.

Kings Return was first conceived in 2016, when Kunda asked some friends to perform with him for a college recital. The a cappella performance captivated the crowd and soon led to local gigs, where the group cut their teeth before finalizing the lineup in 2020. Composed of tenor Vaughn Faison, bass Gabe Kunda, tenor JE McKissic, and baritone Jamall Williams, the Dallas-based quartet has since captured the hearts of millions of fans in-person and online. They earned their first taste of fame that summer, when they arranged, performed, and posted a video of their soul-stirring, a cappella rendition of “God Bless America,” which went viral. The next year, they posted a more classical a cappella performance of “Ubi Caritas,” which also went viral, amassing over 10 million views. A pivotal moment for the budding act, Kings Return began to shift away from a strictly gospel focus to explore a more diverse musical repertoire. They dropped their debut EP in December 2021, a warm, jazz-leaning holiday album titled Merry Little Christmas, followed by the June 2022 release of their stunning Bee Gees cover “How Deep is Your Love” off debut LP ROVE, which earned a GRAMMY nomination for “best arrangement instrumental or a cappella.” Epic, expansive, and polished, ROVE was released in September 2022, showcasing a nuanced attention to detail and a remarkable fusion of four distinctive, classically-trained voices into one elegant and intricate whole.

The group’s name perfectly embodies their intentions as artists: “Kings” because they possess a charismatic power, moving forward with confidence to conquer whatever challenges arise. The “Return” signifies another important part of their mission: to give back to the communities that have supported them along the way.

“We don’t use any instruments, and it can feel very vulnerable to perform on stage alone, especially as Black men — with all stigma that entails” says Kunda. “When we come together to do this vulnerable thing called a cappella, it strengthens our bonds. It makes us tighter as a unit and as human beings. We want to be examples for other men like us.” Now poised to release their first full-length holiday LP, aptly titled We 4 Kings, in November 2023, Kings Return continues to defy expectations, charming audiences with their signature smoothness and sophisticated, down-to-earth charisma.

Winners of the San Francisco Comedy Competition
SAT MAR 21 @ 8 PM

Gary Michael Anderson
, acclaimed for his charming and introspective humor, has captivated audiences far and wide. Crowned winner of the 2023 San Francisco International Comedy Competition, Gary’s comedic path began on college night at a local comedy club. Drawn by the lure of student discounts, the club became a tradition for him and his teammates. While the headliners dazzled, it was the openers who caught his attention. Their raw, unpolished performances made Gary think, ‘I can do this, and maybe even better.’ What he initially mistook for professional acts were, in fact, open micers. This discovery didn’t discourage Gary; it motivated him. The first time he took to the stage, he experienced an adrenaline rush reminiscent of his football days.

After honing his skills in San Francisco’s renowned comedy scene, Gary now resides in Los Angeles, fueled by a passionate goal: to have someone else write his bio in third person, rather than writing it himself, in third person.

The Other Mozart is the true, forgotten story of Maria Anna (Nannerl) Mozart, the sister of Amadeus – a prodigy, virtuoso and composer, who performed throughout Europe with her brother, to equal acclaim, but whose work and story faded away, lost to history. The play is based on facts, stories and lines pulled directly from the Mozart family’s humorous and heartbreaking letters.

The Other Mozart had a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run at HERE Arts in NYC and in London at St. James Theatre. The play has been presented in Austria by the Mozarteum Foundation at the Mozart Wohnhaus in Salzburg (inside the Mozarts’ apartment), in Vienna at the Mozarthaus Vienna (inside Amadeus’ Domgasse apartment), at the Pasinger Fabrik in Munich, in Hong Kong, Estonia, and Toronto, and continues touring theaters and universities across the US.

Leave a Legacy

With a legacy gift to Livermore Valley Arts, you can be sure your charitable intentions will be realized while achieving the most favorable income tax benefits available. We are happy to meet with you to talk about your intentions and situation. However, we strongly recommend you consult with your estate planning professional or tax advisor to fulfill your goals for your financial portfolio and tax needs.

Making a legacy gift to the Center also qualifies you to join the Legacy Society, a group of philanthropic and pioneering members who share a strong bond with LVPAC and a desire to ensure a meaningful, lasting home for the arts in Livermore Valley.

If you have already included LVA in your plans (or if you intend to), please let us know. Contact Chris Carter, Executive Director, at [email protected] or call (925) 583-2311.

We accept a range of planned giving options:

In Your Will
The simplest way to leave a planned gift is to make a bequest including specific language in your will or living trust naming LVA as the recipient. The following is an example of suggested language to include in your will/trust:

“I give and bequeath to the Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center, a California non-profit corporation, located at 2400 First Street, Livermore, CA 94550, the sum of $____, or ______% of my estate, to be used for the accomplishment of its general purpose (or for a specific purpose as indicated).”

Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity (CGA) is the easiest way to create dependable income for life and help the Center. Please note that LVA does not administer CGAs but can recommend an administrator.

Charitable Trusts
A Charitable Remainder Trust or Charitable Lead Trust allows you to receive an estate or gift tax deduction and create a source of income for you or your loved ones while supporting the Center. Please note that LVA does not administer these trusts but can recommend an administrator.

Real Estate/Appreciated Assets
A variety of assets can be donated such as real estate, appreciated securities, and tangible personal property such as art or jewelry. Donating appreciated assets can help offset income and capital gains taxes. If you are contemplating gifting an investment property or a vacation home, a gift of real estate offers an excellent option for tax-wise giving. You can also include the Center as a beneficiary of real estate or appreciated assets in your will. Please be aware that as part of our gift acceptance policy, all gifts of real estate, appreciated assets and tangible personal property are examined on a case-by-case basis.

Retirement Plan Donations or Life Insurance Policies
You can name Livermore Valley Arts as the beneficiary of your IRA, 401k or 403b retirement plan or life insurance policy. This is a simple, effective way to support the arts while reducing or eliminating significant, often unanticipated tax penalties.
