Donor Advised Funds (DAF)
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is an increasingly popular approach to charitable giving. These funds are set up solely to support nonprofits. In 2024, nonprofits received nearly $55 billion in grant funding through DAFs.
How Donor-Advised Funds Work
Donors Contribute
As a donor, you have many benefits, including immediate tax deductions for your charitable contributions, tax-free investment of your charitable dollars, and capital gains tax avoidance by directly donating appreciated stock, ETFs, or crypto. For the nonprofit you are donating to, it is a powerful tool and welcome gift, and it can help you make a lasting impact on the causes you are passionate about.
Assets May Grow
With a DAF, you can contribute as frequently as you like to your personal fund and grant later. You can also set up recurring gifts to your favorite nonprofits, specialized grant agreements with an organization, and anonymous grants.
Know Before You Give
As laws change frequently, it is best to check with your financial advisor or the IRS website for the most up-to-date information about the most current laws regarding Donor-Advised Funds.
What information will your DAF need?
To process a grant recommendation, your DAF manager may need to request certain information. Once an initial gift is made to a non-profit organization the information is securely stored on file so you can more easily recommend grants in the future.
