Livermore Valley Arts

10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Batik workshop designed to introduce participants to the basics of this traditional art form. The workshop will be 4 hours, suitable for beginner skill levels, with the goal of teaching attendees to create their own batik designs. The instructor will provide a brief overview of batik’s history, followed by a hands-on session where participants will learn how to apply wax and dye to fabric. All participants will be able to take a finished piece they have made home. All necessary materials, including fabric, wax, dyes, and brushes, will be provided. There is a material charge of $40 that is due on class day. Instructor, Yjnt Malladi, began her creative journey with a painting class, that led her to study Fashion Design in National Institute of Fashion & Technology, Bangalore, India. There, Malladi learnt to work with fabric and textiles, understood good apparel and fell in love with the vibrant handmade craft traditions in India.

“Married life took me to Singapore, allowing me to explore, learn and master the South East Asian craft of Batik. Ever since, I have used Batik as a medium of artistic expression, conceptualizing bespoke scarves and designs through colourful, contemporary designs inspired by life in South East Asia.” – Yjnt Malladi
